Commissioner Steve TroxlerDear Educators,

As you look for innovative ways to engage your students in a fast-paced learning environment, I encourage you to consider the N.C. State Fair’s competitive exhibits. Our competitions allow students to hone their creative skills and vie for first place honors and prize money, while learning about North Carolina’s agricultural heritage.

The Web & Graphic Design Competition, now in its 14th year, challenges Internet-savvy and creative competitors to use the State Fair as the subject of original graphic and Web page designs. The 2008 State Fair theme is “Take Time for a Great Time.” We have added an extra day to the Fair, which means there are now 11 days of fun, food, agriculture and entertainment. I look forward to seeing how competitors will interpret this year’s theme and the many Fair activities in their Web and graphic designs.

For 155 years the State Fair has been the place to showcase advancements in agricultural technology. Today’s farmers use global positioning technologies to precisely manage fertilizer applications, the internet to advertise their crops and find equipment and satellites to track the weather online. Technology is an integral part of students’ daily lives, too. From search engines to social networking, young people learn about the world in new ways every day, and the Web & Graphic Design Competition is an opportunity for the Fair to reward technological creativity.

Good luck with your entries and I hope to see you at the Fair Oct. 16-26!

Sincerely,
Steve Troxler
