Varsity Vocal Showcase at the N.C. State Fair
highlights local collegiate talent

RALEIGH — A new event at the N.C. State Fair gives fairgoers a chance to show their school spirit and support local talent. The first-ever Varsity Vocal Showcase, presented by Mattress Firm, will take place Thursday, Oct. 11, in Dorton Arena.
The concert will feature five a cappella groups from area universities: Rhythm & Blue from Duke University; Grains of Time and Ladies in Red from N.C. State University; and UNC Clef Hangers and The UNC Loreleis from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
As part of the showcase, the State Fair will donate up to $50,000 collectively to the participating singing groups. Donations will be based on the number of tickets sold on behalf of each group. Tickets are $10 each, and the proceeds will go to the group designated by the ticket buyer at checkout. Tickets will go on sale online Aug. 1 at www.ncstatefair.org.
“We’re always looking for new ways to highlight local talent at the State Fair,” said Fair Manager Wesley Wyatt. “The Varsity Vocal Showcase is not only a great addition to the fair’s concert lineup, but it’s also a wonderful way for the fair and concertgoers to support the arts.”
The State Fair concert lineup also includes a variety of contemporary Christian, country, pop and R&B performers: Matthew West with Sanctus Real, Oct. 12; Jake Owen, Oct. 13; Hot Chelle Rae, Oct. 14; Scotty McCreery, Oct. 15 and 16; Jason Michael Carroll, Oct. 17; Brian McKnight, Oct. 18; Michael W. Smith, Oct. 19; Billy Currington, Oct. 20; and Corey Smith, Oct. 21. Concert tickets range in price from $5 to $25, and will be available online Aug. 1.
The Varsity Vocal Showcase is part of Preview Day Thursday, Oct. 11. Visitors can enjoy discounted gate admission and purchase unlimited-ride wristbands. Gates will open at 3 p.m. and rides will open at 3:30 p.m.
The 2012 N.C. State Fair will be held Oct. 11-21 at the State Fairgrounds in Raleigh. For more information, go to www.ncstatefair.org.
